Belenismo sa Tarlac

If Pampanga has its year-round celebration of Christmas then there is another kind of celebration that you should visit. Adjacent to Pampanga, Tarlac has its Belenismo – an annual province-wide contest and exhibit of Belen (nativity scene) displays in different forms and sizes that runs from November to January.

Belen Capital of the Philippines

“Belenismo sa Tarlac” was launched by Isabel Cojuangco-Suntay, sister of former Ambassador Eduardo Cojuangco Jr., president of the Tarlac Heritage Foundation. It is a project aims to bring back focus to the Holy Family specifically the humble birth of Christ, instead of the traditional lanterns and Christmas trees during the holidays.

The organizers also hope to put Tarlac on the tourism map of the country by showcasing the artistry of Tarlaquenos. It can be a way for the locals of Tarlac to sharpen their skills, talents, and ingenuity as they promote good family values.  Belens are in the form of dioramas, monumental displays, and paintings made by Tarlaquenos of different ages.
