Olango Island

Olango Island supports the largest concentration of migratory birds found so far in the Philippines. Migration starts from the breeding places of birds in Siberia, Northern China, and Japan. Anticipating the scarcity of food and winter cold, these birds fly as far as Australia and New Zealand from late July until late November. This is usually referred to as the Southern Migration. By late February until May, these birds return to their breeding grounds in the reverse Northern Migration.

Today, the Olango Island is a major sanctuary for approximately 40,000 migratory birds. The 1,030 hectares of sand flats and mangroves is a home for the birds due to the migration. There are 97 species of birds in Olango, 48 of which are migratory species, while the rest are resident birds of the island.

The Philippine Dept of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) have been tasked to protect and manage the area. The Olango Wildlife Sanctuary is also a good destination site for bird watching.
