Kabankalan’s 37th Sinulog Festival 2013


This year, Kabankalan City celebrated the 37th Sinulog Festival last January 11-20, 2013, with its theme "Above and Beyond Fun: A Pageantry of Thanksgiving". On January 11, 2013, the celebration started with a holy mass at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, followed by the Sinulog 2013 Invitational Shootfest at the Central Philippines State University at 8 AM to 4 PM. The City's Mayor, Isidro Zayco, led the opening salvo held at the town's public plaza around 5 PM along with the band and fireworks display at 7 PM.

Kabankalan’s 37th Sinulog Festival 2013

Sinulog de Kabankalan Festival is held every third week of January in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, celebrating the feast of El Señor Sto. Niño. It is the town's version of Sinulog in Cebu City and Ati-atihan of Aklan.

This year, Kabankalan City celebrated the 37th Sinulog Festival last January 11-20, 2013, with its theme "Above and Beyond Fun: A Pageantry of Thanksgiving". On January 11, 2013, the celebration started with a holy mass at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, followed by the Sinulog 2013 Invitational Shootfest at the Central Philippines State University at 8 AM to 4 PM. The City's Mayor, Isidro Zayco, led the opening salvo held at the town's public plaza around 5 PM along with the band and fireworks display at 7 PM.

The procession of the Sr. Sto. Niño Image in the city's main road was participated by various parishes, schools, and townsfolk.

Different groups in the town joined the much-awaited dance competition. This year, 12 tribes competed in the street-dance contest where Tribu Atiklan of Barangay Binicuil was hailed champion with special awards such as Best Choreography, Best in Streetdancing, Best Tribal Banner and Best Costume Design. Tribu Atiklan also joined the Aliwan Festival last April 2013. Other tribes like Tribu Miano of Barangay 4 was awarded as the 1st runner up while Tribu Ompong of Barangay Tabugon was declared as the 2nd runner-up and Tribu Tagwan of Barangay Tagukon and Camingawan was announced as the 3rd runner up.

During the celebration, GMA Kapuso stars Isabel Oli, Alden Richards, Jaya and Moymoy Palaboy joined the 2013 celebration of Sinulog in Kabankalan City on January 18, 2013 at the City Plaza, 9 PM. The search for Sinulog Queen (January 18) and Grand Tribal Parade (January 20) highlighted the festivities.

The Sinulog de Kabankalan 2013 was filled with different activities, events, and programs such as JCI Search for Wonder Kids of Kabankalan (January 15), K-CAT Viva Night with special guests Ronnie Liang and Anja Aguilar, (January 17), Search for Sinulog Queen  and GMA KAPUSO FIESTA show (January 18), PBA Goes to Kabankalan w/ WNU Mustangs, Sinulog 2013 Mardigras 2013 and Fireworks Competition (January 19) and the Grand Tribal Parade and Competition (January 20) with ABS CBN Kapamilya Stars and SMB Night featuring Brownman Revival on January 20. 

The 10-day celebration was crammed with more fun and enjoyment that drew a large number of audiences during the celebration.

Getting there

Kabankalan is less than two hours drive south of Bacolod city by private car while public utility vehicles reach the place in about two hours. The city, which serves as the center of economic activities in southern Negros, is also the take-off point for various destinations down south, and links the province to Dumaguete City, capital of nearby Negros Oriental via Kabankalan-Mabinay.
