Rasa Island Wildlife Sanctuary

If you want to see the Philippine Cockatoo in the wild, Rasa Island is a must-visit destination. Being one of the prime eco-tourism destinations in Palawan, the island is a bird sanctuary and home to the intense population of the already critically endangered Philippine Cockatoo (Cacatua haematuropygia).

Since 1998, Rasa Island’s advocacy program is the wardening scheme which involves patrolling and protection of the birds, most especially during the breeding season. This scheme has increased the population of cockatoos on the island nearly tenfold over ten years. Aside from the Philippine Cockatoo, it is also the home of other endemic Palawan wildlife such as black-nape oriole, white-vented shama, racquet-tailed parrot, and rufous-tailed tailorbird.

Delight of Rasa Island!

In 2006, Rasa Island was declared Wildlife Sanctuary through Philippine Presidential Proclamation 1000. It brought fame to the municipality of Narra to be known as the “Philippine Cockatoo Capital of the World”. Also, the island was named as “One of the Top 13 Bird Watching Sites in the Philippines” by the Philippine Department of Tourism (PDOT) and was promoted during the 2009 World Travel Market in London.

Rasa Island is perfect for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and wildlife enthusiasts! A visit to the island will put a positive mark to love the environment.
