History

A group of five Filipino actors who pooled their meager resources to put up the company, namely Ms. Zeneida Amador, Ms. Carmen Barredo, Mr. Leo Martinez and Mr. and Mrs. Tony Mercado, were the founders of Repertory Philippines in 1967. When they opened their first play, there were seven people in the audience, only three were paying customers. Today, Repertory Philippines Foundation Incorporated is the Philippines’ only company that has consistently produced at least seven productions a year for forty years. It has an average of 200 performances annually, with audiences ranging in number from 200 to 800 per performance. The company is now headed by Ms. Barredo.

The Achievements

Repertory Philippines had produced more than three hundred plays and is the only company that has productions running every weekend of the year except for the months of June and July. They have productions of Shakespeare's plays and other classics, comedies and dramas. There were also classical children's musicals shown on weekend mornings and during the week for school. At present, the company produces four full-length plays, one full-scale musical, one Shakespeare or classic play, and one children’s play each year. Whenever possible, they take shows on the road and they also participated in Philstage-sponsored outreach activities.

For more than three decades, Repertory Philippines has claimed to achieve three important things. One is that the company established the standard for theater production in the Philippines and paved the way toward more professionalism in Philippine theater. Another is that the company has trained, developed and launched the careers of many Filipino talents, some of whom have achieved international and national fame. And lastly, they have provided cultural outputs that aid the Department of Education (DepEd) in promoting appreciation of theater literature and theater arts to the general public.
