St. Gregory the Great Cathedral

The Philippines is one of the religious countries in Asia. It is seen through hundreds of churches that were built especially during Spanish colonization. Some of them are considered as one of the UNESCO Heritage sites and some are well-preserved to become one of the tourist attractions and prominent landmarks of the province. One good example is St. Gregory the Great Cathedral or locally known as Cathedral of San Gregorio Magno and Albay Cathedral – one of the oldest churches in the Philippines.

Olden Times of the Cathedral

St. Gregory the Great Cathedral was created in 1834 through the kindness of Pedro Romero. The first church was buried in 1754 and ruined during the Mayon Volcano eruption. Its facade has a semicircular arched main entrance with portico, flanked by niches and coupled columns on pedestals supporting the triangular pediments. The Cathedral is the Episcopal Seat of the Diocese of Legazpi City and one of the largest bishoprics in the Philippines.
