Sulu Trip Adventure: A Deep Exploration of the Island

The Island of Sulu

Dubbed as the “Mother of Pearls”, Sulu pearls were considered as the finest in the world, found in high-bred shells in deep, clear, and rapid tidal waters. The Pearl Farm at Marungas Island, Sulu Sea, is dotted with coral reefs and can provide probably some of the world's best dive spots for those seeking the ultimate underwater beauty and adventure.

Maubo Beach in Patikul is one of the many fine beaches in Sulu. It boasts of about one kilometer of white sand. Another beach is the Tanjung Beach located just three kilometers away from the town proper.

Other places to see is the Far-flung Sulu nested in the southernmost part of the Philippines. It lies between the Sulu Sea on the north and the Celebes Sea on the south. The glorious province is known for its best diving sites. Rising from the volcanic depths of Sulu Sea in the Western Philippines and the country’s first inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993, Tubbataha Reef National Marine Park is the best-known diving site for many divers throughout the world for its marvelous underwater ecosystem and marine wilderness. The fabulous beauty of the marine park is the home of many marine creatures including snappers, sweet lips, groupers, angel fish, and morays. It is an atoll of coral reefs teeming with large schools of barracudas, jacks, rainbow runners, and tunas.

Aside from diving sites, the island is rich in other tourist attractions. It possesses museums and other sites which are worth visiting, like the Sulu Ethnological Museum at Notre Dame College, the Moorish-inspired provincial capitol, and the Masjid Jami which is the largest of the town’s mosques. Another infrastructure is the Bud Dato, a 200-meter-high hill outside Jolo, which is the site of the revered tomb of a Muslim missionary from abroad.

Jolo is also rich in history. Evidence of the violent past of Sulu during the Spanish times are scattered throughout the town. Buildings that were gutted by fire or riddled with bullets during the 1970s still stand. The place has its own version of Intramuros, said to be the smallest walled city in the world, with its historic brick walls that lay proof to the city's colonial past. The wall measures 8 feet high and one and a half feet thick, and surrounds the former Spanish garrison of Jolo. It served as a protection against intermittent attacks by Moro Sabil-illah (Juramentados) and it was constructed by the Spanish occupation army soon after the fall of Jolo on February 29, 1878, with labor supplied by Filipino deportados who were prisoners of the Spanish Army.

Visiting Sulu is quite nerve-racking to every tourist because of its bad impressions. But did you know that despite of it, many tourists travel here, foreign and local alike, just to see the beauty of island province? As a writer, it is an achievement to know the hidden treasure of our roots plus its natural wonders. Sulu is a must-see destination, that I's sure of!
