Vigattin Radio once again provided us new updates about information technology. They talked about the recent developments on the open source market. With anchors Mr. Den Macaranas and Mr. Elison Barcelo, they invited guest from 8Layers Technologies (a pioneer in open source technologies in the Philippines) and UnPLUG (UP student organization that is dedicated in promoting Open Source Software).

The esteemed guests are Mr. Meric Mara, Chief Executive Officer/Chief Technology Officer of 8Layer Technologies, Inc. With Open Source Evangelist Ms. Mitch Tabirao and Mr. Albert Yumul of UnPLUG. All of them are dedicated to advocate the free and open source software through trainings, seminars and software development.

Meric Mara told Vigattin Radio: “8Layer is an organization that actively promotes open source. This year we have three events that we want to share with the youth. First is the Linux Day where we promote different kinds of technology. It will happen on August 23. Second is the Software Freedom Day that is set to occur in Marinduque City on September 19 to 20.”

He continued, “The last event is the First Philippine Open Source Challenge which will be the longest hackathon that will happen in Southeast Asia, it will happen in 60 hours. We also choose to have collaboration with the youth making software that can benefit the whole country.”

When asked about Linux, Mara told Vigattin Radio that it is an alternative operating system which is becoming known in the mainstream. He added that you can use the software for free.

The next to talk on Vigatin Radio is Mr. Albert Yumul, he said; “The UP Linux Users’ Group is showing the students the importance of open software in their research and studies. The group is also for all the youth who wants to learn open software. All the members of UnPLUG are from UP.”

He added that they also have some project and one of those is the software that they used on the UP election. They are also planning to bring the software to the nationwide elections because it has been recognized outside the country.

Meanwhile Mitch Tabirao talked about on her job as an open source evangelist. She told Vigattin Radio, “What we do is we talk to different kinds of people, companies, schools and organizations when it comes to open source technologies and we asked them if they can participate in our advocacies. So, in 8Layer we are collaborating with UnPLUg to make Linux Day happen on August 23.”

She added that during that event, there will be different schools, SMEs and LGUs that will take part on enlightening people about Open Source.

Open source in production and development promotes a universal access via a free license to a product's design or blueprint, and b) universal redistribution of that design or blueprint, including subsequent improvements to it by anyone.  Researchers view open source as a specific case of the greater pattern of Open Collaboration, "any system of innovation or production that relies on goal-oriented yet loosely coordinated participants, who interact to create a product (or service) of economic value, which they make available to contributors and non-contributors alike." (Wikipedia)

Open source refers to a computer program in which the source code is open to the general public. It can be used for modification or alter it from its original design. The open-source code represents a collaborative effort from programmers who improve it and shares it within the community so that others can enhance it further.

The main principle behind open source software development is through peer production.  Its open-source model is based on a decentralized model of production, opposite to the centralized models of developments used in commercial software companies. The movement for open source software began as a response to the restriction of closed proprietary code, and today, the movement is spreading to different fields which are using open-source software that can be improved by others.

The guests later answered questions from the listeners before the show ended.
