The Enchanted River of Surigao Del Sur

The Enchanted River is one of the best tourist attractions in Surigao del Sur. It is located in the boundary of Barangay Cambatong and Barangay Talisay in Hinatuan. This river deserves to be one of the prides of the province. The waters of the stream are very blue and crystal clear. From the head spring, the river flows 600 meters into the coastline of Hinatuan Bay.

It is said to be enchanted ‘because no one has ever reached its bottom.’ Despite the fact that many people have already tried to reach the bottom including scuba divers, all of them failed. Hence the start of the legend of its bottomless pit. Moreover, the locals of Barangay Talisay shared that no one has been successful in catching fish in the river.

The area is surrounded with trees and also bordered by up to 40-meter cliffs of soft limestone and verdant shrubbery. Tourists can also enjoy diving in the river. According to the locals, the river's depth is probably measured around 24 meters or 80 feet, particularly the dark blue part which is ideal for snorkeling. There are areas which are good for swimming or just taking a dip, but make sure to be mindful of the deep parts of the river. However, for safety reasons, there are life jackets that are for rent for as low as 100 pesos for those who don’t know how to swim and life guards are employed in the area.

Another legend of the river tells that its bluish color is the result of its depth and the water clarity changes througout the day. Meanwhile at around 12: 00 noon, the water becomes more majestic and once the bell is rung at noon, the people swimming at the area gets out and fishes starts to appear and enjoys the feast. It becomes a daily habit of the locals to feed the fishes at the area because for them, it serves as an entertainment.

According to the older people living near the area, swimming in the river is just until around 6pm or before evening because it is believed that the river is guarded by some spirits, also known as “Engkantos”. The spirits are described as two women with long blonde hair and a green skinned man who has been seen walking on the river and disappearing in the air. This is another reason why the river is called enchanted.

Tourists can go to the Enchanted River by riding a bus in Davao. The travel time is more or less than 6 hours.
