Vigattin Radio: Filipinos in Animation

Last Saturday proved to be another engaging and exciting forum about Filipinos in the animation industry as well as the new brand of entrepreneurship in the country with startups as well as the groups willing to support them. In another informative episode of Vigattin Radio at Radio Inquirer 990, this episode is part of a series on the growth and development of a new generation of entrepreneurs and the support they get from various groups and organizations.  This issue has become more relevant as Filipinos are becoming more and more innovative and more resourceful of business opportunities, especially those that make use of information technology and the Internet, and now, animation.

The distinguished guests for that week’s episode included Armand Serrano and Chino Caparas, exceptional animators in their own right. It has been known for quite a while that Filipinos have particularly excelled at animation, both traditional and 3D and CG. Filipinos have been prominent figures working for the big animation production studios, like Disney, Sony and Warner Bros. We may not realize it, but many of the animation we see on the big screen, on, TV, and on the internet have been made through the talents of many exceptional Filipinos.

The first guest was Armand Serrano, a very prominent feature animation visual development artist and layout journeyman. He has been in the animation industry for 18 years and is currently an art director for Sony Pictures Animation in Culver City, CA. He was also a layout journeyman for Walt Disney Animation Studios in Orlando, Florida.  He talked about how he got started into animation despite his varied background, how he loved drawing as a child and how he eventually worked his way up from different animation outfits to having worked for Disney and Sony.  He relates how Filipinos have become key players in the field of animation.

The next guest was Chino Caparas of Stream Engine Studios.  He realtes how his company does animation work for companies here in the Philippines and all over the world.  He also loved to draw as a child and has developed that along with other talents while growing up.  Though he has had a diverse background, he still found drawing and animation to be his passion and got to set up his company.  He talked about how creativity is important in this field and having the perseverance for it will eventually pay off.  He also states of the many opportunities, especially in the international market where the Philippines gets a great amount of income but is still small compared to that of other countries, so we still have a lot of space to grow.

Ideaspace was also there to talk on startups, especially those that make use of information technology and the Internet, and now, animation, and stressed on determination, iteration, and new techniques.
