Cronado and continued by Maestro Proceso who came from Manila to finish the work. It was gutted by fire in 1866 except for the Holy Cross Chapel. The church was finally finished in 1870 after Capitan Mateo Espinoso, a sculptor and painter of renown, put on the finishing touches. It has a main nave, a transcript, and twenty-eight pillars which support the walls. The walls are as thick as the pillars which are two meters thick and made of mortar and lime. It is located close to the east end of Carcar-Barili Road where it connects to the national highway. The falls are approximately 200 feet high but do not have a direct descent. It was established as a diocese on August 14, 1595 and elevated as a metropolitan archdiocese on April 28, 1934 with the dioceses of Dumaguete, Maasin, Tagbilaran, and Talibon as suffrages. Construction of the cathedral took many years due to frequent interruptions, brought about by lack of funds and other unexpected events.
