
University of the Philippines Los Baños
by Jhaypee Guia on September 1, 2012The University of the Philippines Los Baños (also referred to as UPLB, UP Los Baños, and Elbi) is a public university located in the towns of Los Baños and Bay in the province of Laguna, some 64 kilometers southeast of Manila. It traces its roots to the UP College of Agriculture (UPCA), which was founded in 1909 by the American colonial government to promote agricultural education and research in the Philippines. American botanist Edwin Copeland served as its first dean. UPLB was formally established in 1972 following the union of UPCA with four other Los Baños and Diliman-based University of the Philippines (UP) units.

Historical Treasure of St. Gregory Church

Dedicated to St. Gregory the Great as its patron, antique relief statues of saints, which were brought by the Spaniards, are preserved in this church.

St. Joseph Church of San Jose, Batangas

It was once built with cogon and bamboo by Augustinian friars around 1788. The present structure was built in 1812 under the supervision of a famous botanist Fr. Manuel Blanco, OSA. It measures 60m long and 14m wide. It also has a Baroque and neo-classic facade and a single-aisled interior, which offers an unobstructed view of the large main altar.

St. James Parish Church, Ibaan
by Jane Dacumos on August 27, 2012The Catholic church of Ibaan is among the oldest in the province of Batangas. According to the parish records, an illustrious reverend Augustinian priest named Fr. Manuel Grijalbo, the first parish priest of Ibaan, took the initiative of establishing the first stone church. The original plan of the present church was drawn by an architect named Luciano Oliver. It has a "cruciform" design that looked like a cross of crucifix, an iconic column facade in towers for the height. The attractive columns in the form of triangle pediment are at its highest peak in front. Construction was started in 1854 and was finished in 1869. The bell towers and church frontage were completed in 1876.
