It is said that it started as a humble thanksgiving for the blessing received by the people of the city, among whom were simple merchants, brokers, traders, farmers and fishermen. From a simple occasion filled with feasts and street dancing, it has become a grand celebration of the many achievements of the city. It now features a week-long showcase of dancing, singing, trade fairs and expos, parades with large, colorful floats, and various competitions.
