According to beliefs, the sacred mystical image of “Dolor” (Our Lady of Sorrows) was found colorfully imprinted/etched on a piece of stone near a flooded stream in the forest in the remote and sparsely populated sitio of Batong Paluay about few kilometers from the poblacion (town proper) in the municipality of San Andres a hundred years ago.

Batalay Shrine: The Story of the Augustinian Priest, Holy Cross, and Holy Water

The site is where the first cross was planted in Catanduanes and was built over the burial place of Augustinian priest Fray Diego de Herrera who died in barangay Batalay in 1576. A spring of clear water sprouted near the cross, believed to have healings powers, which the natives regarded as an unusual phenomenon.
